A dreamy, fully immersive new track, “While I Drift” offers a hypnotic introduction to Fiona & The Glow‘s rich indie-rock and neo-folk palette, pairing spacey synths, warm bass, and guitar shimmer with the captivating lead presence of New Zealand singer-songwriter Fiona McMartin. The second single from the upcoming Infinity EP gradually expands from intimate reflection into soaring emotional release, with swelling vocal layers and serenely memorable instrumentation.
A thoroughly hypnotic soundscape quickly establishes, melding spacey synth pads, a lushly absorbing bass pulse, and caressing guitar twangs. A trip-hop nostalgia unveils in that sequence, and particularly so as McMartin’s riveting delivery emerges. “My departure is your gift, keep our apartment while I drift,” she continues as frolicking acoustic shimmers guide seamlessly. A wordless phrasing enthrallment ensues, while glistening guitars add to the blissful atmosphere.
Consuming delivery layers continue to build artful momentum, culminating past midpoint into a soaring lead allure, reminding of Wolf Alice’s dreamiest material crossed with a Portishead-like sophistication. The final minute compels in its intersecting glimmering guitar tones and effervescent backing strums, which mingle with McMartin’s phrasing, emitting an ongoing harmonious serenity. Delighting across both its initial late-night spaciousness, with lush synths and booming bass, and more expanded delivery emotion, “While I Drift” is an excellent track from Fiona & The Glow, leaving us firmly anticipating their upcoming Infinity EP, out on November 20th.
