Red Skylark – “Sweat Off Your Soul”

Showcasing a hooky blend of alt-rock and power-pop, “Sweat Off Your Soul” is the new single from Red Skylark, the solo project of Columbus, OH-based musician Ed Shuttleworth. The track explores the tense, charged dynamics between performer and audience. Dynamic vocal layers and soaring guitar layers collide to deliver a punchy, punk-tinted anthem that captures both ardent confidence and creative angst.

A driving rock energy is apparent from the get-go, with rollicking guitar twangs and steady rhythms ascending in momentum to the melodic reveal. The “still waiting by the phone” lyrical anticipation and sweltering depictions combine with immersive jangling, shifting to a more power-pop harmoniousness as the triumphant, “born to rock ‘n’ roll” delivery moves into memorable guitar pulses and delectable vocal harmonies. “Someone smashed the light out in your soul,” another consuming segment declares, thematically encountering both charismatic confidence and self-reckoning.

The final 30 seconds are especially invigorating in its energy, with accelerating, soaring guitar walls melding with an array of both punchy and dreamily inviting harmonies. Reminding of Teenage Fanclub’s most spirited material in its cohesive crossing of alt-rock and power-pop, “Sweat Off Your Soul” is an enveloping success from Red Skylark, who also caught our ears earlier this year with the excellent album Somnorine.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
