Lawrence, Kansas-based band The Roseline emit a lovely blend of Americana, post-punk, and folk on “Wet Black Fin,” the second single from their upcoming album.
The release succeeds in its emotional thematic hold, exploring the complexity of “navigating a partner’s emotions while they’re processing grief.” The lyricism serves as a poignant reminder that simply being present and listening is an enormous relief and act of devotion. Metaphorical comparisons of grief to a “wet, black fin of a shark circling the boat” deepens this poetic imagery.
Musically, the track is equally captivating; twangy guitars and pulsing percussion drive into warming organs, building into a more distortion-friendly final act. Subtle post-punk influences anchor the rhythm section, while the earnest vocals, twangy fretwork, and resonant organs channel a classic Americana heart. “Wet Black Fin” leaves us firmly anticipating The Roseline’s forthcoming full-length project.
