Guildford, UK-based artist Zachary Mason‘s three-song EP Welcome To My Heart crafts a reflective folk soundscape. Gliding strums, delicate keys, and understated basslines support meditative vocal lines, merging traditional singer-songwriter sensibilities with subtle atmospheric swells and beautifully unexpected psych-rock textures.
“Can’t Feel My Autumn…” is a lovely opener, hypnotizing with tranquil layers of acoustic guitar amidst a soft, string-laden undercurrent. “I’m trapped within protection, I see the world from afar,” a distant-sounding, lush performance then emerges, referencing a “special time of autumn” — and furthermore the time when “all the leaves must die.” Ensuing reflections show in the “life is so funny…” rumination and accompanying acoustic trickles. “I Need Freedom” ensues with a similar arsenal, employing steady strumming and woozy backing layers that build into a title-touting yearning for personal freedom following feelings of suffocation and being trapped.
Rounding out the EP, “Me and I” compels in its initial embrace of electric guitar twangs, leading a blissful introduction that flows into serene acoustic strums and Mason’s introspective lead delivery. “In this life I’m living, I watch myself and try to make my way,” he reflects, amidst a melding of gentle keys and comforting guitar work. This track is especially stellar in its dreamy, layered sophistication, infusing elements of psychedelia and rock into Mason’s affecting folk disposition.
