Hamilton, Ontario-based act No Beauty conjure a gripping alt-rock vigor on “Matty,” described as exploring “a looming sense of despondency and a constant underlying urge to escape town.” Nostalgic guitar riffs drive into a spacious twang as Helena Zogogiannis’ dynamic delivery opens by admitting “I had a bad dream about Matty again.” More thunderous distortion ticks up as tumult-laden lyrical laments move into further perspectives of bad times in the past, present, and future — followed up by a delightfully scorching guitar solo, and then back into the bass-thumping verses. “Matty” is a rousing alt-rock gem from No Beauty.
The standout track comes via the band’s upcoming sophomore album Drive Slowly Think of Me, out in November.
