Blushfire – “A Storm the Size of Four Earths”

Brooklyn-based artist, songwriter, and producer Blushfire explores the tension between romantic surrender and self-protection on “A Storm the Size of Four Earths,” a theatrical art-pop single built around haunting synths and layered backing harmonies. Incorporating NASA storm samples and swelling arrangements, the track moves from intimate nocturnal introspection toward an enveloping, emotionally charged refrain.

A haunting intrigue emanates from the nocturnal synth pads and ghostly wordless harmonic presence to start. Blushfire’s lead presence emerges thereafter, touting a lovely balance of dreamy melodic precision and late-night chills. “She loves people with oceans in their eyes,” she lets out amidst a slight percussive pit-patter and lush backing harmonic reflections. The aesthetic reminds fondly of a cross between Cocteau Twins’ serene atmospherics and Chromatics’ more laid-back nighttime pursuits.

A dynamic performance shows around the three-minute mark, where a glimpse of spoken-word intrigue develops into a soaring melodic delivery, leading into the “don’t promise me love” refrain. The caressing intertwining of harmonic layers in that repetition is spine-tingling, reverbed with sophisticated success as the production fades out with a satiating allure. “A Storm the Size of Four Earths” is an enthralling success from Blushfire, unveiling a gripping art-pop sound that delights in its haunting backing harmonic layers, vibey synth work, and constant sense of momentum.
