Emmi Maaria – “I am the whisper of blood”

/

A spirited track from Finnish singer, violist, and composer Emmi Maaria, “I am the whisper of blood” represents the second release from a three-part work, reflecting on the use of Finnish literature “in forming a universal female narrative.” The London-based artist meshes vibrant viola pulses alongside riveting vocal work, poetically reflective of literature’s power in cadence and content.

The track is inspired by Edith Södergran’s poem “Vierge Moderne” (modern virgin), which was influential in the “conversation of women’s rights to study without any limitations based on their gender in 19th century Finland.” Vocal refrains, like “body of mine,” play with poignancy alongside the emotive viola riff, culminating alongside buzzing tones and soaring vocal effervesce past the two-minute mark. Emmi Maaria’s literary-revering folk sound resonates with stirring authenticity and timely relevance throughout.

This track and others featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2022’ Spotify playlist.
