Comrade Hat – “Go to Waste”

Last autumn, Neil Burns (Comrade Hat) impressed with “Old Amsterdam“, a lush, bittersweet ode to the eponymous city that touted a chillout lounge-friendly sound. His atmospheric prowess was evident then, and is also the case on the more recent track “Go to Waste”. A follow-up to the aforementioned city ode, “Go to Waste” is “a tribute to the simple joy of wallowing for half-awake 3AM dreamers.” Stylish guitar twangs and a crawling bass help establish a nocturnal feel early on, with an effervescent hook reveal at 01:07 helping interject some infectious light into the murky soundscape. “Go to waste, before you go to bed / Don’t let the failure go to your head,” Burns sings longingly during the exceptional moment, on a track that shows both grand atmosphere and clever hook construction. This project, based out of Londonderry, UK, continues to impress.
