Noise Ratio, the project of multi-instrumentalist Jeff Valput, often works around ominous piano lines and a direct, near-spoken-word vocal delivery that reminds of Sparks. His new album Songs on Fire finds the West Virginia-based artist explores interesting melodic transitions and arrangements, while intentionally avoiding saccharine or overly melancholic elements. Album track “Freed Love” is a good example of such, with the idiosyncratic style pushing toward around 02:32, when orchestral additions combine with a metal-minded guitar presence for an originally captivating sound. His vocal delivery is unique and not entirely polished, though adds audible sincerity to the work.
