Nathaniel Paul – “King’s Grave”

Nathaniel Paul‘s recent track “King’s Grave” pairs lush indie-folk arrangements, layered vocals, and gently swaying instrumentation with poignant reflections on lost idealism and unrealized potential. Inspired in part by the loss of his father, the single finds Paul considering the distance between the world we hope for and the one we inhabit, while holding onto the importance of human connection.

The track enamors in its melodic, dreamy stylings, resonant vocal layers, and affecting thematic hold, capturing the tragedy of wasted potential in the face of living life in fear. “I heard all the bad news today, king’s in his grave, at last,” Nathaniel Paul’s vocals resonate amidst mellow guitar trickling. “Such a shame, he could’ve made something great, and now it’s just too late.” A haunting vocal layering adds to the ensuing sequence, beckoning “come along” with reassuring warmth. The swaying guitars and gently bouncing bass line pairs with ethereal vocals for a lushly absorbing mix throughout.

“Please don’t wait ’til it’s too late,” an especially impactful vocal sequence repeats as the track’s final minute arrives. A calming finale of blissful guitar layers then unveil as Paul’s vocals become absent, concluding the track with a serene dose of introspection. “King’s Grave” is another standout piece of songwriting from Nathaniel Paul, who has caught our ears in the past with tracks like “The Girl with No Tattoo” and last year’s album Steady as We Go, in addition to his work with The Bergamot.
