Brenna Lowrie – “After Dark”

//

Loss Leader is a beautiful folk album from Brenna Lowrie, a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter from Alberta, Canada. The hypnotic, psych-tinged aesthetic throughout reminds of Nick Drake in terms of atmosphere. Among the album’s highlights if the dreamy “After Dark,” a short yet captivating effort with caressing multi-layered vocals and stirring acoustics over a woodwind-guided glow. The murkier, darker “Better Late Than Never” follows the track up, showing its own form of beauty with a different tint. Lowrie’s production, emphasizing wordless backing vocal chants and haunting guitar accompaniments, succeeds throughout. Loss Leader is a fully consuming folk release.
