Astro Villas – “Turning Into Gold”

An anthemic rocker with peppy effervescence, “Turning Into Gold” is the latest track from Astro Villas, the Baltimore-based project of Sean Pennington. Hazy, whirring synths glide into a series of perky guitars with a playful synth backing. The vocals emerge with a crisp clarity, accompanied initially by a rock-forward arsenal of guitars and rhythm.

The bright synth backings re-emerge during the excellent “take the edge off slow,” hook, adding a lushly melodic component. Bass-heavy verses past the two-minute mark show added emotion in building toward the hook’s re-entry. “Turning Into Gold” is a delight throughout. Pennington describes the track as “a retrospective on getting caught up in repetition and learning to ignore toxic positivity.”

Astro Villas is prepping a full-length, due for release this coming spring.
