Barbicop – “Morpheus’ Mercy”

/

Eerie synths and commanding vocals dazzle throughout “Morpheus’ Mercy,” the new single from Barbicop, the project of Maddie Sandri (also singer and guitarist in Dream Parade). Exploring “the negative thoughts triggered by a toxic relationship,” “Morpheus’ Mercy” entrances with a sound that balances lush dreaminess with intriguing emotive unease.

The Berlin-based project impresses with an atmospheric hold throughout the track, particularly during the resonating “you’re gonna break my heart,” chorus — which drives into a higher-pitched vocal escalation that sends chills. A murky, lower-pitched vocal segment thereafter presents an ominous touch, finishing up with the dreamy synth-laden “break my heart,” hook. “Morpheus’ Mercy” is a delight from Barbicop.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2022’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Dream-Pop.
