Girls Know – “Some Words”

///

“Some Words” is the infectious debut single from Girls Know, an act from the Pacific Northwest that proudly embraces ’00s revival-rock nostalgia. The initial vocal nonchalance and scraggly guitar distortion shows a Strokes-esque charm with melodic familiarity, traversing thereafter into a stellar hook that ushers in a tinge of emo-laden vigor. The vocals here let out a convincing pleading — “I wish I could scream out your name!” — that captures the sense of frustration and heartache apparent in hurt relationships.

Per the band: “‘Some Words’ is a song about the person you care about doing and saying things that hurt you, and in turn you hurt them. When feelings get involved, some words are best left unspoken. When you are hurt, every word people say just drives the knife deeper.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2022’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Rock.
