What Strange Beasts – “Starlight’s Castaways”

/

“Starlight’s Castaways” is an exciting rocker from What Strange Beasts, the Seattle-based band who caught our ears with the track “Scattered Skies” last month. “Starlight’s Castaways” represents a “thematic sequel” to their debut album, The Maestro’s Tale, which touted a space theme that reflected “on feelings of distance, isolation, loss, introspection, and ultimately the relief of interpersonal connection,” per drummer/vocalist Jonathan Maxwell.

Spacey synths and heavy guitar pulses provide an immediate dose of excitement, fit for racetrack cruising and summer days. Brightly rousing vocals complement the playful guitars with enamoring appeal, driving cohesively to a dexterous guitar solo rounding the two-minute mark. A burst of vocal excitement follows, proudly proclaiming they’ve “got a feel for the wheel,” — and indeed, with such a bright and punchy rock sound on display, What Strange Beasts sound like they’re in the driver’s seat so far this year.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of February 2023’ Spotify playlist.
