Superswell – “Dutch Courage”

“Dutch Courage” is a grungy rock success from Brooklyn-based act Superswell. A dexterous guitar-laden fury falls into a more contemplative feeling as the vocals emerge. An impassioned “I’m not scared,” remark is surrounded by exhilarating guitar tones that evoke a sense of ’90s nostalgia, with a whimpering guitar line pairing cohesively with the distortion-forward vigor. The vocals’ absence approaching the two-minute turn enables the blistering guitar work to shine, rising into another raucously inviting “not scared,” reprisal.

The band’s sophomore single, “Dutch Courage” is described as “a satirical ode to booze.” Lyrics like “shrunken brain, guts down the train / seeking clever things to say,” mesh with the hard-rocking vigor to produce a sensation reminiscent of early Manic Street Preachers’ lyrical forays into addiction. Sadly, the track also represents the last song recorded at historic Sabella Studios, which fell to a fire a few hours after the band’s recording session.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of March 2023’ Spotify playlist.
