common goldfish – “On The Sidelines”

//

Tottenham-based artist common goldfish struts a bright, psych-tinged power-pop appeal on the new track “On The Sidelines,” representing the first track from the artist’s upcoming debut EP — which, with this first entry, certainly captures as intended the “spirit of a psychedelic summer whilst firmly routing itself against the backdrop of London culture.”

“It’s about letting go of the ego and unleashing your wild side,” common goldfish explains. “We shouldn’t take for granted the ability to spend time with our mates getting loose. For me life is about accumulating memories not materials. I want that to come across to anyone that listens and enjoys the music.”

Contemplative initial lyrics prove fitting amidst the dazed vocal tones and playful guitars. The 30-second mark unveils a hypnotic, hooky splendor that reminds of vintage Supergrass. Hazy keys enamor past the first minute, guiding seamlessly into the multi-layered vocal whimsy, which asks “does anybody care for the truth?” Another ensuing chorus proves captivating, furthering the effort’s blend of psych-pop spaciousness and peppy Brit-pop nostalgia.

The project’s previous single this year, “Low Lights and Throwback Tunes,” drew praise from tastemakers like BBC 6Music’s Steve Lamacq. common goldfish are on a clear ascent.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of May 2023’ Spotify playlist.
