Paul Supreme – “Ninja Sword”

An emotive synth-pop appeal resonates on “Ninja Sword,” a new track from Milwaukee-based artist Paul Supreme. Understated nocturnal pop inclinations intrigue in the first minute, evolving into an ardently expressive vocal rise with wailing intensity. “I want it!” the artist lets out here, exuding a yearning for “you’re not mine yet,” amidst the colorful key-laden pulsations and stutter-y percussive excitement. The “cut just like a ninja sword,” analogy finds melodic accompaniment in a series of added synth lines.

The contrasting tones of the lusher verses and impassioned “I want it!” declaration makes for a perpetual intrigue throughout. Supreme deftly balances late-night synth atmospherics with an in-your-face central hook, finding a middle ground between accessible synth-pop and creative soundscape-driven charm. I’m looking forward to hearing what’s next from the artist, who has music talent in his blood (his late father Dennis Flemion played in cult favorite band The Frogs).

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of June 2023’ Spotify playlist.
