figure eight – “altar”

/

Showing a delectable rock sound with textural elements of shoegaze and slowcore, “altar” is the new single from figure eight, a duo from Davis, CA comprising Nash Rood and Mar Baeza. Releasing via Cherub Dream Records, “altar” is the first track from figure eight that isn’t self-released, following some DIY cassette-only demos.

A swell of hazy guitar distortion ignites the effort with a warming glow. The serenely haunting vocal integration lends an ethereal, weightless quality to the husky guitar whirring, concocting a nostalgia reminiscent of Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine. Subdued guitar strums thereafter coincide with a vocal reprieve, escalating thereafter into a second half fully embracing of its heavier, gauzy guitar tones and lightly hypnotic percussion. “altar” is a strongly memorable single from figure eight.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2023’ Spotify playlist.

We discovered this release via MusoSoup, as part of the artist’s promotional campaign.
