“(Did I Say) Goodbye Too Soon” is a rousing rocker from The Backroom Rumors, an ascending band from Houston’s DIY scene. The first track from the act’s upcoming album, it’s described as “about a relationship that I ended, and the lyrics go through the motions of wondering if I made the right choice.”
The opening vocals exude a confidence about moving on and finding someone new, escalating into tinges of regret and self-doubt as a title-touting remark drives into an exhilarating guitar-front ardency. Even as a new relationship flourishes, the previous one still gnaws with persistence. “Why am I thinking about it?” the vocals sigh, resonating into the “are you thinking of me?” refrain; the track plays with a genuine, yearning composure amidst its exciting rock production.
