Echoplay – “Change”

/

Netherlands-based rockers Echoplay mesh alt-rock and post-punk with moody vigor, exemplified well on new single “Change.” This release departs a bit from the Utrecht-based act’s typically darker approaches, strutting a peppier persona in its title-touting chorus and general production.

Crunchy guitar riffs and psych-friendly phasing drive into vocals that proclaim “I see myself as you see me, distorted vision of feelings / I let it get to me, you let it sink in now.” The lyrics stir in portraying self-doubt in the midst of a questionable relationship, as one side beckons the other to change.

The chorus’ response enamors in its melodic guitars and affirming vocals: “I won’t change, ’cause I won’t.” The vibrant percussive pulse and soaring vocal affection compels here, exceling into a moody post-punk inspiration in the guitar section into the second minute. “Change” is a stellar rock showing from Echoplay.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of August 2023’ Spotify playlist.
