Viruette – “Sick Hominid”

//

Boston-based trio Viruette unleash a gripping rock energy on new track “Sick Hominid,” the lead single from their debut EP, Waylaid in Aspic. A melodic, amped-up sound recalls moody post-punk, ardent punk, and heyday Brit-pop in its escalating, fervent production. A thick bass line and dynamic vocals, alternating between rock-ready excitement and suave mystique, accelerates into a stylishly understated bridge — and then an ensuing punk-ready hook, with delectably raucous qualities, emitting an anthemic burst with Brit-pop nostalgia.

The band describe the effort as telling “the story of a narrator seeking to end a relationship, but failing miserably in the endeavor, succumbing to the temptations of transient pleasures. He awakens in a state of self-loathing, and finds himself grasping for self-serving rationalisations of his failure to break things off, rather than take responsibility.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of October 2023’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Rock.
