Swiss Citizen – “Now Go Through”

A dynamic electronic tour-de-force, “Now Go Through” is one of many highlights throughout Fully Finite, the new album from Victoria, BC multi-instrumentalist Swiss Citizen. The project of lifelong songwriter Craig Brown — who is also a full-time climate scientist — Swiss Citizen dazzles with a sound that balances emotive vulnerability, hooky charisma, and atmospheric intrigue — fondly reminiscent of a cross between The Notwist and Air.

Flickering electronics guide into a bass-y resonance and warbly piano, as Brown’s vocals let out: “There is no way out / We’ve lost our exit signs.” Stabs of effervescent synths signal a sense of palpable momentum, culminating in a lovably moody bridge. “We’ve always been overboard,” his vocals echo there amidst simmering synths, then gearing up into an invigorating dose of heavier rhythms, vibrant synths, and escalated vocal emotion. The two-minute turn also compels in its click-clacking rhythmic power, while the layered vocal feeling there shows a likeness to Thom Yorke’s solo work. Suffice to say, “Now Go Through” is a fantastic production, excelling in both its intoxicating soundscape and climactic structural unveilings.
