A gorgeous track out today from Portland, OR-based artist FLINN, “Ancient Light” crafts a soaring art-pop sound — expanding from a dreamy, harmonious vocal delivery to layered expanses of shimmering piano, twangy guitars, and steady rhythms. Sounding like a lovely blend of Perfume Genius, James Blake, and later-era Talk Talk, the project delights with spaciously meticulous production, bolstered by strong thematic pursuits. Per FLINN, the release “explores generational inheritance and collective movement, the feeling of being part of something greater than ourselves.”
An orchestral-like resonance pairs with mellow synth pulses as the track gets underway, quickly bolstered by FLINN’s magnetic vocal presence. The wordless lushness is then complemented by jangly guitars and warming bass, into the track’s memorable central refrain: “Who will dance on the fruit, that has fallen from the vine?” That line in particular plays as a call-to-action for future generations, capturing “small victories, and the unseen weight of our actions.” The verses — pleading to “make it through” — prove equally compelling. Capped off by a blissful finale with alluring guitar and piano interplay, “Ancient Light” is a brilliant piece of songwriting from FLINN.
