La Biche – “Éther”

/

First grabbing our ears over the summer with the hypnotic dark pop gem “Combien,” Paris-based artist La Biche builds another intoxicating, atmospheric production that weaves spoken-word vocal lushness with soul, dream-pop, cloud rap, and trip-hop components. Chilled-out though also hauntingly dark, “Éther” is further indication of the artist’s ability to balance ghostly soundscapes with an understated yet infectious pop allure.

Eerie spoken-word vocal stylings and haunting piano ease into a sporadic percussive click-clacking. A steadier rhythmic underlying appears as singing vocals assume prominence, with the mellow keys glistening and interchanging vocals evoking a trip-hop nostalgia. The mid-point sends chills, in particular, as overlapping vocal layers continue the dreamy pop enigma. “Éther” is another showcase in delectably creepy soundscapes and debonair pop momentum from the talented La Biche.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of November 2023’ Spotify playlist.

We discovered this release via MusoSoup, as part of the artist’s promotional campaign.
