Conjuring a haunting sound with its vocal quivers, chilly piano adornments, and art-folk acoustics, “Be With Me” is an immersive success of a track from Copenhagen-based artist Ani Even. The track’s aesthetic reminds stirringly of later-era Scott Walker, particularly in its ability to sound simultaneously unsettling and melodically magnetic. “Be with me,” ghostly vocals let out alongside spine-tingling reflections, sounding like a procession from a yearning afterlife, filled with loneliness and beckoning for connection.
Coming via Ani Even’s upcoming album, Skinwalker, “Be With Me” unfolds with artful intrigue. Sporadic smatterings of piano complement vocals that “dream of a place free of hate” — again showing a sense of yearning, and in this case for an escape from tumult and doubters. The enjoyably shaky vocal delivery, sounding like a cross between Scott Walker and Antlers, enthralls from start to finish — both in its solemn leads and mirrored backing elements. “Be With Me” is an enveloping success that has us firmly anticipating Skinwalker.
