Super Creeps – ‘The Black Friday’ EP

Alameda, California-based garage-rock duo Super Creeps unleash ferociously enjoyable grit on The Black Friday EP, pairing ’90s grunge bite with punk immediacy, distorted hooks, and chaotic energy that thrives on raw spontaneity over polish. The riveting release also features production by Grammy-winner Reto Peter (Green Day, Modest Mouse).

A thunderous rock vigor kicks off the EP with “Dreamt It,” a delectably thrashing, grungy rock mover that shifts seamlessly between debonair “it was nice knowing you” vocal remarks and an elongated ardor. The vocals’ palpable yearning combines with a bustling rhythmic clamoring and heavy doses of guitar distortion, for an invigorating impact between the “scorch the earth” post-punk maneuvering. Subsequent track “Candelabra” embraces a more punk-ready immediacy in its snarling guitar tones and peppy vocal drive, with the momentary halt during the “don’t care!” vocal being especially memorable.

The EP immerses with a variety of hard-rocking successes, with “Accomplice to Murder” being a particular standout in its momentum-filled alternations between submerged vocals and fuzzy guitar pairings, and whirring onslaughts of noisy rock. “House of Pain” is another delight, showcasing the band’s dynamic tonal chops across over 8 minutes of enjoyable structural unpredictability. Initial suave guitar twangs and panting percussion swell across a patiently unfolding first half, then embracing a bluesy, no-frills rock charisma in the fever-referencing lyrical scorching; it makes for a psychedelic gem that stretches its legs out enjoyably. The Black Friday is a thorough success of a rock EP from Super Creeps.
