Newly released EP Universe unveils a stirring rock sound from Amsterdam-based band Dim Pinks. Blending hints of the Velvet Underground and Pixies, the release explores existential confusion, resistance, and intimacy within a dynamic sound — captivating from serene vocal layers to fervent, twangy guitars.
A climactic current of pulsing guitars opens the EP on “Universe.” “Not gonna let you take us down, I’ll watch your step until you fall down,” a lush vocal presence exudes, pairing a serene tonal disposition with invigorating lyrical confidence. The peppy rhythms fade momentarily as twangy guitars move in with satisfying impact, then driving into a reprisal of the “not gonna let you take us down” vocal drive as the murmuring rhythm guitars and expressive lead continue to envelop.
The ensuing “I Don’t Want To” is similarly compelling. “Better get used to it,” a solemn vocal exudes, ascending in the “I don’t want to” response; glistening guitars and escalating rhythms combine there enjoyably, again melding a perseverant lyrical bite with a resonating rock-forward production. Elsewhere, “Solitude” delights in a hazier, elongated vocal multi-layered, attaining a harmonious lushness in its embrace of being “on your own.” EP finale “Where Is the Car?” caps the release off in excellent form, enthralling in its slowcore-friendly guitar introspection in between moments of twanging vibrancy. Showcasing a memorable rock sound spanning from laid-back to ardent, Universe is a consuming EP from Dim Pinks.
