Eternal Beta Mode is a memorable conceptual electronic album from Budapest-based producer Zságer Balázs. Blending experimental electronica with cybernetic textures and modular synths, the record draws inspiration from Alan Watts in exploring themes of impermanence and identity. Balázs himself is a prominent figure in Hungary’s electronic music scene since the early 2000s, especially as the leader and creative force behind Žagar.
Album opener “Végtelen Üresség” unfolds with a spaciously haunting immersion, weaving a simmering, droning solemn ambience into foreboding tonal murkiness, which resembles a hushed, guttural vocal. “Etűd” arrives next with a lushly approachable disposition, its twinkling synths lending a dreamy appeal that’s further bolstered by effervescent electronic flourishes; right away, with the opening two tracks, Balázs shows a clear ability to traverse both nocturnal and bright atmospheric realms, with the latter achieved remarkably well with the buoyant “Etűd.”
Another standout track, “Repatched” finds a lovely middle ground between darkly ruminating intrigue and glimmering expression. Vague, warbly layers assemble enjoyably into airy washes of synths, attaining a luminescent glow at the two-minute turn that swells into daytime allure and then back into a crackling nighttime flair. “Alaktalan” is riveting as well, crafting a stunning soundscape in its melding of whirring synth pulsations and more elegant, understated doses of tonal serenity. Eternal Beta Mode is a thoroughly consuming album from Zságer Balázs, expertly blending heady themes within absorbing electronic soundscapes.
