Mighty Joe Belson – “The Process Of Individuation”

Cover Art: Romain Bonnet

“The Process Of Individuation” is a gripping ambient solo piano single from California-based composer Mighty Joe Belson. Inspired by Jungian psychology, the immersive instrumental maps the psyche by layering elegant piano chord progressions with a flash of unsettling effects, representing a mind overloaded by introspection before returning to a tranquil epiphany.

The track’s production artfully traces the pathway of one’s mind exploring the inner self, commencing with a comfortably hypnotic steadiness and expanding into delectably unsettling layers of sound, reflective of a mind becoming overloaded. The track’s conclusion features a reprisal of the initial, elegant piano chords, artfully representing the discovery of an epiphany: how the truth was always present in the beginning.

The opening tranquility of piano exudes a spacious atmospheric pull, reminiscent of Ryuichi Sakamoto in its introspective pull. The piano work gradually grows into further emotion, with heightened tones complementing the lush chords. The first 4+ minutes delight with gorgeously illuminated piano playing, succeeding melodically and also in its thematic role of exploring the unconscious self. A swell of distortion lingers as the final minute comes into view, that sense of overload invigorating and then shifting back to the introductory piano work. “The Process Of Individuation” is a gorgeous, heady ambient success from Mighty Joe Belson.
