Klein & Jamison – ‘Piano Trio No. 2 “Mary Margaret”‘

Composers Jim Klein and Ian Jamison (comprising Klein & Jamison) deliver a deeply moving five-movement modern classical work with Piano Trio No. 2 “Mary Margaret”. Conceived as a 31-minute elegy for Klein’s late infant granddaughter, the piece explores grief and remembrance while masterfully shifting between delicate, minimalist piano passages and bustling, triumphant string arrangements.

Commencing the release, “I. Allegro agitato” develops with a sense of climactic grandiosity. Swells of emotion are widely apparent in the dynamic tonal range, initially unveiling through somber string processions and progressing toward anxious piano vibrancy and flurries of intense strings. A delicate piano-led section around midpoint also enchants, delighting in its interplay with flourishing strings. A triumphant culmination of these instruments stirs across the track’s final minute. The ensuing “II. Animato” also delights in its build-ups from minimalist piano to heartfelt string-laden expanses, emphasizing that variety between bursting ardor and delicate minimalism in the final minute especially.

“Piano Trio No. 2 “Mary Margaret”: III. Adagietto” is another standout, beginning with a gorgeously introspective layering of melancholic strings and stately piano. Plucked strings and effervescent piano chords combine with alluringly bright qualities, while the final couple of minutes exudes a more cinematic, sophisticated mystique in the dramatic string work, particularly. Finale “V. Andante con moto” ventures with comparable power, in its development from subdued piano to an emotive tour-de-force of interacting instruments. Piano Trio No. 2 “Mary Margaret” is a powerful modern classical output from Klein & Jamison.
