Greater Manchester trio Mercy Kelly unveil delightful songwriting and magnetic productions on their Summer of Silence EP. Blending jangly guitars, stadium-sized melodies, and atmospheric synths, the four-track collection delivers a confident suite of emotionally resonant, hook-driven indie-rock anthems.
Opening the EP with energetic vibrancy, “Breathe for Her” expands quickly from stutter-y synths into a soaring guitar-forward prowess. Twangy exuberance leads into a “walls are closing in on me” vocal introspection, ruminating on finding oneself in spite of personal strife and a tumultuous world. The “fire deep inside” segment stirs thereafter, invigorating in its heightened emotion, as does the starry-eyed finale, where spacey synths complement the concluding vocals. Arriving next, “Love Song” melds calming acoustics and glistening electric guitar, encouraging to “feel the rain” and beckoning to “sing me a love song” as caressing synths seamlessly move in. The EP quickly showcases Mercy Kelly’s penchant for emotional yet hooky songwriting.
Another highlight, “Speak Too Soon” (previously featured here as well) is amongst the band’s favorites live, in addition to “Breathe for Her.” “Speak Too Soon” opens with summertime reminiscing and subsequent shift to autumn, letting out an “it will be all right” reassurance as an effervescent “did I speak too soon?” hook arrives; the twanging guitars and anthemic vocals are riveting and replay-inducing here. EP finale “Shard of Rain” compels as well, again referencing hardship and perseverance in its resonant themes and trickling guitar flair. Full of heart and hooky rock approachability, Summer of Silence is a wholly memorable EP from Mercy Kelly.
