San Francisco-based artist Michellar channels internal obsession on “Can’t Get You Out of My Mind.” Beginning with subtle acoustic instrumentation and reflective vocals, the arrangement steadily expands into art-rock territory through vibrant keys, driving basslines, and vintage-inspired psychedelic textures.
Steady acoustic pulses exude a layered precision as the lead melody opens with ethereal entrancement, its “sitting under the stars, looking out into the dark” lyrical introspection adding nicely to the steady build-up. A sense of longing and yearning is apparent as the lyrics reference “my calling,” before ultimately admitting a struggle to “get you out of my mind.” A lovely, brisk injection of bass and keys follows, furthering that sense of heartfelt momentum. The track is riveting in its gradual expanse from folk-ready contemplation to sweeping art-rock appeal.
An emotively gripping, title-centric refrain hits hard at midpoint, with an ensuing “nobody knows the sparks when we touch” description continuing that account of powerful love. Twangy guitar adornments and dreamy backing harmonies also delight during this section, building toward a powerful melodic climax. “Can’t Get You Out of My Mind” is another dynamic, melodically memorable piece of songwriting from Michellar, who has caught our ears previously with tracks like “Never Say Sorry” and this year’s full-length REVERIE ….FROM THEN TILL NOW.
