Throes NYC‘s “Fight The Urge (Minimum Risk Remix)” transforms their debut single into a murkier, industrial-driven aesthetic. Clattering percussion, sturdy bass, and inventive atmospherics back Courtney Leo’s haunting performance, thematically capturing the central psychological tug-of-war “about the moment your ego tells you to keep going, even when your conscience is begging you to stop,” per the band.
While the track’s original mix struts a starry-eyed, effervescent intrigue initially through its glimmering synths, the Minimum Risk Remix embraces darker waters right away. Rather than arriving after a gradual build-up, like in the original, the remix immediately pushes forth Leo’s lead performance, which recalls Portishead’s Beth Gibbons in its serene yet powerful quality. The sparkling synth tones are absent in favor of fully embracing the industrial, dark combination of ruminating bass and haunting percussion. “I got nothing to lose,” her delivery flows with ghostly allure, culminating in a gripping “I can’t fight the urge” declaration.
A riveting sequence follows, where Leo’s delivery takes a momentary backseat to clanking rhythms, haunting synth lines, and whooshing effects. “Everything inside of me is pulling me back from what I believe,” the vocal lines then re-emerge, bolstered by head-nodding rhythms as the perseverant themes continue to ring out.
