Forgotten Garden – “Civilisation”

Moody rock and haunting vocals linger across “Civilisation,” the latest release from Scottish-Portuguese duo Forgotten Garden. Led by Inês’ expressive lead performance and Danny’s instrumental arrangements, the song examines humanity’s troubled direction, confronting the erosion of democracy, political dishonesty, war, and the climate crisis.

Developing with beautiful artistry from solemn introspection to multi-layered vocal allure, the track opens with a moody interaction between creaky, trickling guitars and a touch of keys. “I came down from my mountain home,” Inês’ riveting delivery emerges, “looking for a sign of wilderness, a place to find my feet.” A fitting expanse in instrumentation aligns with the change in locales, from the beautifully barren wilderness to the buzz of civilization, conveyed by the added rhythms and Inês’ imagery of “the cars went by with their exhaust fumes, the people went by with their latest perfumes.”

The response to “where am I?” culminates in a haunting title-touting refrain, gorgeously memorable into the punctuating “disintegration” remark. More foreboding depictions of a world drowning, while fighting rages on, touch on themes of war and climate crisis — referencing easily swayed populaces, false hope, and decay. The dichotomy of civilization and the sense of being “civilized” with bleak tumult is poignantly impactful, as is the production’s moody rock stylings and strong lead performance. “Civilisation” is a stirring success from Forgotten Garden.
