Joan Torres’s All Is Fused – “Summoning”

joan torres

Joan Torres’s All Is Fused is the project of 26-year-old Puerto Rican bassist/musician Joan Torres, who perceives his second album – The Beginning – as representing “a clearer picture” in regard to his voice as a composer. A student of the bass since age 11, Torres is joined on The Beginning by a wonderfully talented cast of musicians who help bring Torres’ compositions – which are influenced by the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Igor Stravinsky – to life. His ability to compose vibrant soundscapes that are both lush and intricately involved is evident on the album’s first track, “Summoning”. The near seven-minute epic is a wonderful representation of the project’s power, ranging from the lively and charismatic keys – reminiscent of Stravinsky’s jerkily brilliant works – to bristling jazz and Latin rhythmic accompaniments.
