Finding a lovely middle ground between introspective dream-pop and brisker rock appeal, “Afterglow” is a memorable new track from Sevun. The release comes via the Canadian project’s upcoming 10-track album Fever Dream, out next year. “Afterglow” swells enjoyably from glimmers of spacey synths into a trickling guitar layering, with the percussion exuding a peppy presence throughout.
“Take me down, to the river,” the opening vocals beckon, capturing themes of yearning and escapism throughout. The “I wanna…” aspirations build into a blissful textural expanse past the one-minute turn, where added guitar layers and heightened vocal passion admit to not caring “where the world is going.” “Afterglow” is an impactful rock success from Sevun.
Sevun elaborates on the track’s creative process and overall aim:
“I wrote “Afterglow” in my basement one night when I was feeling hollow and disconnected from myself. I imagined being at a rave in the middle of a forest, surrounded by strobe lights and completely consumed by the energy of the night and another person. I wanted the production to capture that feeling of frantic escapism, like if I stopped moving for even a moment, I’d have to feel the depths of emptiness inside me.
The song lives in the tension of wanting to feel everything and trying to fill this void inside that never quite goes away. If someone else can pour all their energy, happiness, and light into me, maybe I can feel whole.
This song temporarily fills the void I feel. I want this song to do the same for other people.”
