A consuming track from NYC-based artist Maxwell Rose, following a year-long hiatus, “Headstart!” swells from an introspective folk allure to a bouncier, infectious pop-rock flourishing. Representing the lead single from the artist’s new EP Only Child, “Headstart!” excels in its thematic grip, capturing “the unequal nature of heartbreak,” and momentum-filled song structure.
“I’m a lover not a runner,” heartfelt vocals push out, asking “so why did you get the headstart, while it tears me apart?” Intertwining vocal layers, clap-laden playfulness, and a final burst of guitars make for a resonant finale. It’s another success from Maxwell Rose, who first caught our ears in 2020 with “NEW SWEATER.”
