Castorp – “Last Night On Earth”

/

Released today, “Last Night On Earth” is a lovely track from Castorp, aka “Welsh-blooded, South-London based” Steffan Davies. The project takes a cue aesthetically from the likes of Gruff Rhys, Leonard Cohen, and Grizzly Bear — all sharing a deeply emotive sound, with Rhys and Super Furry Animals in particular channeling a sort of yearning melancholy that’s reminiscent here. The track is described as “the first chapter of Davies’ story of redemption, rebirth & recreating yourself – breaking the shackles of the past in order to move on, and brimming with the desperation that comes first.” Deep, warming vocals are accompanied by glistening verses and a chorus that’s aided by a Beach House-like hypnotic guitar line, all culminating in a track that’s melodically memorable and stylistically suave. “Last Night On Earth” is a winner from Castorp.

“Last Night On Earth” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of May 2019’ Spotify playlist.
