A bevy of frantic percussion, twangy guitars, and melodic synths open “Onlysong” in enjoyably expansive form. The gripping new track from Chicago-based band Ex Okays, “Onlysong” is a fantastic start to 2020 for a band that plans on releasing many singles this year. Spanning over five minutes with several exciting shifts, “Onlysong” shines especially around 02:50, when a fluid synth and jangly guitars establish a more yearning feel compared to the initial rock-based excitement. The release bursts with creativity and structural liveliness. Similar-sounding bookends are comprised of beautifully melodic guitar, synth, and rhythmic alignment, with the track’s mid-points touting vibrant ideas. Ex Okays are a band whose releases I’ll be happily anticipating throughout the year.
