The Looniest Toon – “Can’t Wake Up”

/

A serene dream-pop intoxicant featuring spacey keys, “Can’t Wake Up” is the latest single from The Looniest Toon, the Chicago-based project of Bex Gaspelin. Described as “a reflection on the state of the country and world at the beginning the COVID-19 pandemic,” “Can’t Wake Up” opens with effervescent synth enveloping.

The pit-pattering percussion and subdued vocals tout a hypnotic enthrallment, entering gracefully into the perky, spacey keys past the one-minute turn. “How do we know what’s right, when everything is just out of sight?” Gaspelin asks following this rise, the vocals playing especially well during their wordless melodic reflections. “Can’t Wake Up” is a dream-pop delight from The Looniest Toon.

This track and others featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of May 2022’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Dream-Pop.
