Buzzard Company – “Head Above Water”

/

“Head Above Water” is a new track from Austin-based band Buzzard Company, the second single from their upcoming EP. The quartet, who formed in 2019, comprises guitarist Mike Mullarkey, drummer Matt Botting, guitarist Kasey Schake, and bassist Jesse Linneman.

The track is a good time throughout, emitting a sound reminiscent of timeless heartland rock and alternative. A warming backing organ and suave vocals drive to a spirited title-referencing chorus, exuding a twangy and contagious pull. The understated verses — featuring the backing organs and rhythm guitars — play well in crafting momentum for the ensuing hook.

The “can’t keep my hands,” bridge escalates with a genuine fervency, evolving into a lovely guitar solo past the three-minute mark. “Head Above Water” is an addictive, feel-good rocker from Buzzard Company, whose upcoming EP I’m certainly anticipating.

This track and others featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2022’ Spotify playlist.
