Villanelle & The Northern Wonder – “December Bloom”

/

Conjuring a glorious ’70s nostalgia with its fuzzy guitars and suave vocals, “December Bloom” is a new track from Manchester-based act Villanelle & The Northern Wonder. Originally a duo upon the release of their debut EP Dark Days at the Grand, the now five-piece has a big 2023 upcoming, with “December Bloom” being the first of several songs recorded last summer with their longtime producers, Sunglasses For Jaws.

The sudden onslaught of guitar fuzz concocts a glam-friendly fervency with shades of T. Rex, with the vocals’ suave and dark composure reminding fondly of Timber Timbre. The debonair chorus finds riveting accompaniment in the bright backing organ, concluding with a bluesy guitar-based energy. “December Bloom” packs ample nostalgia in its immediate guitar tones, though also exuding a sense of comforting familiarity in its suave, smoky contemporary rock charm.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2022’ Spotify playlist.
