Megan Kennedy – “Time Machines”

The excellent “Time Machines” is the debut single from Megan Kennedy. The Melbourne-based artist captures “the feeling of being caught in a daydream,” while bolstered by dreamy guitar tones, concocting a sound fondly reminiscent of Japanese Breakfast in its emotive, atmospheric rock sound. Comparing brains to time machines, the track consumes in its lush perception of a blissful time loop, and being delightfully stuck in a moment of time — lyrically reflected in the “a crescendo stuck on repeat,” line.

Partially written by Kennedy as she gazed into the Pacific Ocean while on holiday, “Time Machines” feels like a comedown from chaos, when one’s mind is finally able to philosophize and linger again. Laid-back vocals and guitars sift through the initial phase, with the “crescendo,” line signaling the rise into the spine-chilling “time machine,” hook. “Time Machines” is a melodic, introspective triumph of a debut from Megan Kennedy.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of February 2023’ Spotify playlist.
