Amy Vee – “Jackknife”

/

A mystique-filled sound emanates throughout the single “Jackknife,” the latest from Australian singer/songwriter Amy Vee. Lyrics reference the “point of no return,” prior to looming tumult, set amidst haunting vocals and debonair guitars reminiscent of Radiohead’s moody entrancement. Twinkling keys add an eerily impactful touch during the chorus, which finds Vee crooning “Jackknife, grace before the strike,” with a ghostly pull.

The opening plays with a spine-chilling introspection: “We are so beyond redemption… is it even worth the fight?” The chilled-out guitar accompaniment assumes a striking character in the bridge, referencing empathy and “who decides who is right.” Each chorus’ reprisal proves riveting in its haunting vocal layering, moody guitars, and playfully atmospheric key twinkles. “Jackknife” is a standout from Amy Vee, representing her first release this year.

The track features drums and production by Gareth Hudson (Hazy Cosmic Jive Studio), and atmospheric guitar work courtesy of Michael Romeo. Vee handles all music/lyrics, playing guitar, bass, Rhodes, and percussion.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of March 2023’ Spotify playlist.
