The Bicycats – “Middle of the Summer”

/

“Middle of the Summer” is a lovely new single from Los Angeles-based The Bicycats, the project of Zachary Bernstein. “This is a song about trying to maintain ties with someone who has infinite charisma and keeps slipping away,” he says.

Mellow keys accompany the initial, awakening lyrics — “Wake up early for the morning parade / I can fake my way through another day.” A psych-pop flourishing is apparent thereafter in the tender acoustics and flashing keys, with a twangy guitar emerging during the “nobody’s got your number,” escalation. The ensuing “dress is like the ocean,” vocal rise plays with chilling, hypnotic qualities into the subsequent, chilled-out verses. “Middle of the Summer” satiates in its meshing of laid-back haziness and twangy rock nostalgia.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of March 2023’ Spotify playlist.
