Pique – “Overtones”

/

A smashing debut single from Texas-based band Pique, “Overtones” reminds fondly of Unknown Mortal Orchestra in its charismatic guitar gliding and perky vocal hooks. The peppy, psych-tinged guitar dynamics rouse with an initial vibrancy, easing into a more sporadic pulse as the confessional vocals emerge.

The “you,” vocal hook — awash in playful guitars and dexterous percussion — conjures those sweet UMO vibes, and is wholly replay-tempting on each entry. The more subdued, organ-laden interlude also compels in separating both halves. An eerie synth-laden illumination concludes the effort with a satiating pull.

The project began as the solo outfit of multi-instrumentalist and producer Nathan Clark, and has since expanded into a live full band. We’re looking forward to hearing what’s next.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of May 2023’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Rock.
