Cat Ryan – “Like This”

/

A punchy track with a jangly charm, “Like This” showcases the songwriting smarts of Cat Ryan, a band based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The track is the first that frontwoman Mary-Anne wrote for the band, back in 2017, and sounds just as fresh today. The melody was originally built around a banjo riff, and culminates today in a shining production with a peppy engagement.

The initial vocals are joined by a reflective guitar-laden brightness, building toward to the halted momentum approaching the one-minute mark. “I never thought it would go like this,” the vocals admit in the ensuing verses, later reflecting on “now I’m over it,” and “I don’t care about that,” following initial excitement. The representation of fleeting emotions, and ensuing attachments, makes for an enthralling lyrical representation alongside the infectious guitar lines, culminating in a stellar “end of the tunnel,” switch-up. “Like This” is a shining success from Cat Ryan.
