Emmannuel and The Unlimited Consciousness – “Milk”

/

The lactose-loving pop delight “Milk” is the debut single from Brooklyn-based artist Emmannuel and The Unlimited Consciousness, the project of Emma Anne Johnson. Inspired by Detroit’s flourishing music legacy whilst growing up in the city — listening to everything from Motown to The White Stripes — Johnson struts a confident and melodic charisma on the new single, described as a “response to their frustrations with capitalism and how it has internalized within themselves and their surrounding communities.”

Funky keys complement initial vocals remarking “working for the man, doing what I can to stay alive,” exuding a relatable frustration as the instrumentation builds alongside twangy guitars and buzzing synths. A modern blues yearning for better days is apparent in the catching mix, with the “I’ll be drinking my milk,” vocal push driving with an invigorating confidence into the playful guitar spurts thereafter. “Milk” plays with thematic poignancy and melodic satisfaction.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2023’ Spotify playlist.

We discovered this release via MusoSoup, as part of the artist’s promotional campaign.
