mia van de loo – ‘open book’ EP

/

open book is the debut EP from mia van de loo, based in Mashpee, Massachusetts. The release is described by the artist as “a collection of songs I wrote as I started to discover my place in the world,” continuing: “It’s full of disappointment and hope; loneliness and friendship; frustration and reconciliation.”

The opening “fairytale” is exemplary of the artist’s knack for emotive, evolving structural engrossment. “I wanna get you out of my head,” delicate vocals project alongside trickling acoustics, heightening in emotion in asking “can anybody win?” — with a rising vocal momentum sending chills thereafter. “In the palace of my mind, I’ve opened every door,” the vocals lend ample mystique on the ensuing “match,” where ghostly wordless vocals immerse during the “lit you the match,” hook.

“doll” is another standout, with insomnia-laden yearnings enthralling alongside shuffling acoustics. “I love you,” signals a gorgeous assembly of vocal layers, ascending in pitch with spine-tingling results. The open book EP is a captivating, intimately evolving success from mia van de loo.

“doll” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2023’ Spotify playlist.
